| Most people come to Mougins in search of Pablo Picasso, who lived and painted in Mougins until his death in 1973. In our collection visitors can view several of the greatest etchings by Picasso thematically inspired by Picasso’s love of Classical art, archaeology, and history. Also displayed are several of Picasso’s linocuts. Their presence in the MACM provides the perfect complement to the classical artefacts in the museum. This is also echoed in the work of other artists who lived in Mougins and nearby, such as Francis Picabia, Jean Cocteau, Arman, Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, and Marc Chagall. These works are enhanced by the splendid Roman portraits painted by Peter Paul Rubens, and the classical themes of Antoine Caron, Alessandro Turchi, Frederick van Valkenborch, Michel-Martin Drolling, Jean-Guillaume Moitte, and John Wootton. |
